Sunbeam 2371 Mixmaster Stand Mixer, White Review

Sunbeam 2371 Mixmaster Stand Mixer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I refused to pay $300.00 for a standmixer, and am glad to have found this one ! The glass bowls are very roomy and the height of the mixer allows ample room to work. The assortment of beaters should allow everyone to mix away ! The 350 watts of power helped blend a peanut butter cookie which can become thick. I found clean up quite easy with the glass bowls and the shape of the beaters, not alot of crevices for sticking.
The only negative is I was expecting a metal cast mixer. This one has alot of plastic/pvc to it. This makes me nervous as far as durability over years of use, as mentioned in the other reviews I was looking for one just like my Mom had. So far it has performed as I expected.

Bosch Universal Plus with Blender Model: MUM6N10UC Review

Bosch Universal Plus with Blender Model: MUM6N10UC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have now had my Bosch for a couple of months. The model I have is a slightly more powerful (1000W) European version with the metal bowl, but otherwise it is the same. It replaces a much-loved Kitchen Aid mixer which I had in the States. I must say that as much as I loved my Kitchen Aid, this Bosch model outperforms it as well as many other mixers. My first impression of the machine upon using it to make bread was that it was way too easy. After using industry-grade Hobart machines, Kitchen Aid, Electrolux, and Kenwood for many years in work and home, I was amazed at how well and effortlessly the Bosch kneaded the dough. I have not one time need to scrape down the sides and there is no spillage.
The capacity is truly enough to make 4 loaves of bread at a time. The lid performs wonderfully, leaving no place for ingredients to escape. Further, the removable part of the lid allows the most space for adding ingredients of all home machines which I have tried. As comparisons: I use an Electrolux Assistant (same capacity bowl)at work every week to make 8 loaves of bread and pizza dough and am frustrated with every batch as the ingredients leap over the backside of the bowl nearly every time no matter how diligently I guard it. The splash guard on my Kitchen Aid I also found to be undersized for adding dry ingredients and I spilled them every time, in the end removing the guard completely. The kneading mechanism on the Bosch looks strange as it has a stationary dough blade as well as a dough hook, but it functions beautifully.
The double whisk works well to mix cake batters. The beaters fit snug in the bowl without hitting the sides. I have experienced that only minimal scraping is sometimes required for cake batters. While this has been occasional and quite optional (perfectionist), it does require that the splash-guard be removed first. I cannot yet give an opinion on its whisk ability regarding cream or eggwhites as I have not had occasion to test that yet. The beaters snap on and off of the head (much like traditional beaters) for easier cleaning and storage.
The plastic blender is of solid and sturdy material and the lid locks onto the blender bowl in addition to having a rubber seal. The blender is driven by a second rotor hidden under a removable cover on the tower part of the mixer base. It locks securely on the base and is as powerful as any free-standing blender I have used. Keep in mind that I do have a 1000W model, so your 800W experience may be slightly different.
Clean up is the only more complicated part of the process. There are not so many more parts, but the design makes it trickier to clean properly. With a tower in the middle of the mixing bowl (similar to a tube pan), it just plain takes more attention and time to clean and the angles of the dough hook makes it a bit trickier than the Kitchen Aid. The whisks are no more difficult than any balloon whisk. All this said, I am so satisfied with the machine that I actually enjoy the more complicated clean up as I get to baby it. And as the other reviewer noted, most parts are dishwasher safe.
I will edit this review as I have more information to add.
I have also attached a customer image which shows the blender attached, the dough hook placed in the bowl, and the double whisk attachment for a bit of visual information.
Enjoy your Bosch! :-)

George Foreman Champ Grill with Bun Warmer Review

George Foreman Champ Grill with Bun Warmer

I bought mine recently and LOVE it! I'm a single person who normally eats out of the microwave and get impatient when it takes more than 5 minutes for some dishes. But I do love to cook but ran out of time with my job nowadays and this does the perfect job of allowing me to cook quickly and clean up just as quickly. I'm very happy with mine! Of note, some people are bothered by the small size. It's just me so it's perfect and possibly perfect for 2 people. Get a bigger size if you cook for a lot of people.

By cooking foods from the top as well as from the bottom simultaneously, maximum moisture and flavor is retained. The one thing that is not retained is the fat, which runs out along channels in the slightly slanted grill to a dishwasher safe drip-tray out front. The grill marks provide caramelized flavor and an appealing apperance for steaks, chicken breasts, seafood, veggies and more. While your food is cooking you can also warm up buns, tortillas, rolls and other bread items on top. After the party's over simply scrape with the plastic spatula and wipe clean with a paper towel or sponge. This model is an ideal size for cooking food for one or two people.

Blendtec The Professional's Choice 1560-Watt Total Blender Review

Blendtec The Professional's Choice 1560-Watt Total Blender
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a powerful blender, and is comparable to the VitaMix. I love the square design of the container, because it is easy to clean - way easier to clean than the VitaMix, and the blade at the bottom is not sharp, so I don't nick myself when cleaning the bottom of the blender. It is also much easier to scrape the blended goodness out of the bottom of the blender. But I don't like the lid design. The lid is flat and sits flush against the top of the blender. It gets splattered from the force of the blended ingredients. Makes a mess when you open it. This is a real problem when blending in between adding ingredients. Also, the plunger sometimes IS needed - even with a BlendTec, although Blendtec says it is not needed because of the variable speeds on its blender settings. There are times when I wish I had the plunger to just push things down while the blender is on. Instead, I have to take the lid off, which is dripping all over with blended goo, thus making a mess, so I can stir the ingredients because there is no plunger to push the food down into the blades like the VitaMix.
I have owned a Vitamix for 15 years, and it has proven to be a workhorse. The Blendtec seems to be just as strong, and I welcome it to my kitchen. It seems to do an even better job of grinding grains than the Vitamix. No "dry" container is needed. You just use the same container for both wet and dry ingredients. You don't really need a grain mill if you have the Blendtec, as it really does a very good job of blending grains and dry beans very quickly. It also makes nut butters almost instantly.
Overall, the Blendtec is extremely powerful, and meets my needs for what I use it for - I do daily green smoothies. I just wish it had a different lid, and a plunger.

The all-in-one appliance works great for making fruit smoothies, freshly squeezed juice, homemade ice cream, milkshakes, cappuccinos, margaritas, soups, sauces, bread dough, dressings, salsas, and more. George Foreman GR10ABW Champ Grill with Bun Warmer, White Review

George Foreman GR10ABW Champ Grill with Bun Warmer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've been watching George's informercials and regular commercials since they first appeared, and I've always been tempted to buy a grill. They were kinda pricey, so I never did. But then, I got one of the small grills with the bun warmer as a gift, and now... I AM HOOKED! I have every intention of buying the extra large grill as a result of the fun I've had with this one.
What you've heard about the grills is all true--they're really easy to clean, they cook food incredibly fast and evenly, and food really does come out as juicy and tender as the commercials show you. Tell you how good it works: I decided to grill skinless, boneless chicken tenders one night for dinner, but they were frozen solid, and I had a group of surly, hungry family members waiting. Just as a gamble, I put the tenders on the George grill to THAW them a little. Well, they thawed all right and were completely cooked in about 8 minutes. Color me surprised!
I've done steak, pork chops, chicken, and shrimp on this little grill, and with each use, I get better and better at gauging the cooking time. I do recommend that you use cooking spray to further the ease of cleanup because spices and marinades tend to blacken (or even burn) where the ridges press into the meat, and cooking spray will slow/stop that. As there's no temperature control on this model, everything cooks at max power, so time is of the essence in making sure what you're cooking doesn't blacken too much.
The bun warmer does just what it promises--warms. No worries about burning the bread because it doesn't toast; it just makes your breads nice and soft. I enjoy the color choices for the lid with this model--I think it's a fun little extra that gives some personality to a simple appliance (I recommend the purple). There's a spatula and drip tray included, and you'll find that the spatula is better used as a scraper than it is for anything else--it makes short work of removing stuck-on food, etc. You'll be stunned to see just how much fat drains away from your food.
If I had to come up with one negative point about the grill, I'd say this: it's not hard to burn yourself on it. The heated surface extends to the sides of the grill, so if you go to move the whole unit, it's really easy to char your fingers.
It's a great introduction to the George Foreman line of grills! The price is incredibly reasonable, and the machine works so well, you'll be glad you got one.

L'Equip 760200 NutriMill Grain Mill Review

L'Equip 760200 NutriMill Grain Mill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review was originally posted to thefreshloaf.com by Mike Avery
I've owned a Nutrimill, a Whispermill and now own a WonderMIll and a KitchenAid mill.
I started with the KitchenAid mill. I really like it for a number of reasons. I like that it extends the use of my KA, and that it was cheaper than the rest of the mills. Also, I like being able to produce cracked wheat and rye chops. In both cases, you want the grain lightly broken and still identifiable. In "The Bread Builders" the authors joke that when you make rye chops, you want three pieces out of the mill for each two that go in. Pretty much true. However, the down side is that it's difficult to produce finely milled flour. Like othes here, I use the two pass system.
Which is what led me to the WhisperMill. It ground grain very finely and had little in the way of adjustment. It went from very fine to very, very fine. No cracked wheat. No rye chops. And, it seemed that the flour quality wasn't as good for bread making purposes as I wanted. However, it was able to make flour in a single pass and could be used for extended periods of time.
That led me to buy a NutriMill because of its advertized and much ballyhooed wider range of settings, a larger hopper, and the claim that it was able to handle starts and stops with grain in the hopper, which the WhisperMill does not handle. Sadly, the wider range of settings is not terribly releavant. Instead of going from very fine to very, very fine it goes from fine to very, very fine. No cracked wheat, no rye chops, and still the breadmaking characteristics of the flour seemed lacking.
When I sold the bakery, I sold the NutriMill and sent the Whispermill off to be overhauled - employees had turned it off and on with grain in the hopper a few too many times. By this time, the Whispermill company had died and been resurected as Wondermill, so now my mill is the essentially identical wondermill. Same comments apply as to the WhisperMill.
The Whisper/Nutri.Wonder mills have larger hoppers than the KitchenAid and can be used pretty much continuously. In baking classes, I've seen a friend grind as much as 25 pounds without stopping, except to empty the output hopper. I think some people have modified their Wondermills to feed into a trash can sized hopper.
The common thread through the Whisper/Nutri/Wonder mill is that they are all micronizer mills. The grains are sent into spinning wheels that are turning at around 45,000 rpm and the grain explodes into powder.
This has implications. A number of implications. First, the output is homogenous. If you grind grain with a KitchenAid or similar maill you can sift out the bran and make whiter flour, Your flour will have flecks in it, which I find attractive. You cannot do that with micronizer producd flour, the particle size is far moreconsistent.
Next, the micronizers produce more damaged starch than steel or stone wheels. Heartland Mills says, "When wheat is milled into flour some of the starch granules in the endosperm are broken. This damaged starch absorbs much more water than the undamaged granules. If too little damaged starch is in the flour, it will be difficult to mix normal to high-hydration doughs. If there is too much, the flour will exhibit high absorption, but the loaf may flatten at the end of proofing as the excess water is released. In between these extremes, as damaged starch increases, absorption will go up, but at the expense of extensibility and overall dough strength."
Yin and yang. Black and white. Teeter and totter. Sweet and sour. Most things need a balance to work well. Most of the people I know who use mills to grind their own flour look more at nutrition than bread quality. They tend to serve bricks rather than well risen loaves. And the micronizers do support that pretty well. My observations of contemporary America is that few of us seem to be malnourished.
However, I know that some people are concerned about trace mineral deficiencies. Minerals are not depleted in the whole grain flours sold on the shelves. Some people are concerned that whole wheat flour goes rancid quickly after milling. To some extent that is true, but I am not convinced that is significant if you buy flour from a merchant with quick turnover of their stocks.
Other people feel freshly ground tastes better. I won't argue that point, as there is no disputing taste.
The bread making characteristics of the stone or steel wheel mills seems to be higher than from the micronizer mills. However, the steel and stone mills have issues too. The KitchenAid is limited as to how much it can make in a single run. The KA's motor will get hot. Like other posters, I make flour in two passes. I will grind as much as 5 pounds, let the mixer rest, and then make another pass. This is OK for home use... mostly. Steel and stone mills such as the Retsel and Sampo are considerably more expensive, but are said to produce much better flour, and can make coarsely ground grain as well.
You can find Retsel and Sampo dealers on line, check Google or bizrate.
If you have a micronizer mill, you can work with your recipes to get the best results you can. First, be patient. Let the flour absorb the water. My 5 minute knead, 5 minute rest and 5 minute knead regimen works very well here. These breads really benefit from the use of vital wheat gluten. I use about 5 or 6% as a baker's percentage. If you go much higher, the bread can acquire a gummy texture that most people find objectionable. I suggest using an American organic vital wheat gluten, such as Bob's Red Mill as the Chinese gluten has been contaminated in the recent past.
Hope that helps,
Mike

Breadman TR456 Panini Maker Review

Breadman TR456 Panini Maker
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For starters, you'll read a lot of reviews here referring to how Amazon ships the unit. I'm not sure if that's how they did it back then (these reviews seem to be older) but mine arrived very well packed, with the original packaging surrounded by filler, surrounded by a cardboard box marked 'FRAGILE' outside. Everything was completely intact when I received it.
Now to the unit itself. I'm pretty handy in the kitchen, and I have one of just about every crazy gadget imagineable. I had two criteria in mind when I bought this - heavyweight (for durability and to retain heat better while cooking) and powerful (to get enough heat in the first place).
My first paninis were made out of steak (top loin sirloin, which I sliced very, very thinly) which I cooked on the grill itself. The grill did a fantastic job of cooking the meat, leaving attractive grill marks and cooking it very evenly. I took a loaf of bread that I'd sliced per the instruction manual, and got cracking. Five minutes later, well done, nicely thinned, evenly cooked steak and cheese panini.
My observations - very strong and even cooking. The unit does feels like its worth more than you've paid for it, which is always good. The heftiness of the machine and the swinging hinge helps you take uneven sandwiches and turn them into evenly flattened and cooked paninis. The cleanup afterwards wasn't bad at all - although I'm sure one person's complaint here that the buildup will be more difficult over time is likely true. The only way I can see getting around that would be to have removeable plates, but that kind of feature is only found in units that are significantly more expensive - in other words, if you want it, you'll have to pay for it (like a Cuisinart Griddler at 4x the price).
My advice - if you're getting started with paninis, this is probably your best bet. Likewise if you're cost conscious. You may have the impression that this is a cheapo unit, and you'd be better off by paying more to get a higher quality unit - but unless there's some feature that you need that this one doesn't have (like those removeable plates, or an adjustable thermostat), I'd pass on that thinking - this bad boy is about as durable and performant as you're going to find, regardless of the price tag.

I have had this slicer for a month now and have made about ten pounds of perfectly sliced beef jerky. The machine is also great for cutting cheese slices which is about a 50% savings from the cost of pre-sliced cheese. We also used it to slice lunch meats like ham and roast beef in super thin portions. This appears to be the biggest money saver as a pound of roast beef slices can easily cost from $6-$10 a pound in the deli, I am able to slice my own roast(or ham)for less than $3 a pound,
This very powerful machine disassembles easily for cleaning. My kitchen cabinets are full of gadgets that my wife and I never use but this one has changed the way eat and shop.

In addition, its thickness-control dial can be set to 0, or "safe mode", when not in use or from 1/32 inches thin to 1/2 inches thick, depending on the task at hand. Other thoughtful design details include a simple on/off switch, a thumb guard, a tray carriage and holder, a blade-locking device for safety, and nonslip rubber feet to keep it stable during operation. I just got this waffle iron the other day. I made waffles this morning and my kids lapped them up! I do wish they were bigger in size but to have all the characters on one is really great. The kids love picking out which ones they want and ate more then they normally would have eaten. I can't wait to try cooking other things in this like the brownies. I thought they cooked really fast if set on the high (4) setting. It is very easy to clean and love they include a little scoop to help put the batter into the character molds. Highly recommend for any Disney fan.

Oster Retractable Cord Toaster Review

Oster Retractable Cord Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Ugg...this toaster replaced my awesome, expensive chrome toaster, which randomly stopped holding down the toast. After some quick scanning of the aisle at Target, I bought this mainly on the basis of low price ($17), and the retractable cord. Now I just can't wait to replace this janky thing.
Pros: Retractable cord is well-placed, and seems to have a nicely built mechanism. Bagel setting actually allows some toasting of the outside of the bagel, which is good. Price is reasonable and fair (if the cons weren't there).
Cons: Toast comes out blackened and burned on the bottom, but warm and barely toasted at the top. No amount of playing with the settings will alleviate this, even on the lowest setting. Mini bagels are especially ruined in this toaster. I have worked around this problem by hovering over the toaster waiting, but that's not exactly an awesome activity. The reason I bought a new one was to stop having to do this, so it kind of wastes my $$ and defeats the purpose of the new toaster. Lowering lever is kind of weak and doesn't always hold the toast down on the first, second, or third try.
In all, I'd skip this one and pick out a better toaster. I'd be returning it this week if I hadn't thrown the box away...
