Vitamix Tritan Copolyester 32-Ounce Container with Dry Blade, Lid, and Recipe Book Review

Vitamix Tritan Copolyester 32-Ounce Container with Dry Blade, Lid, and Recipe Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm a huge Vitamix fan and have used one for many years. Mine didn't come with a dry blade container so I purchased one separately more recently. There's no question that it does a great job with coffee and whole grains, but the regular container works fine for some of those things, too. Recently I started grinding my own grains for bread on occasion. For example, I couldn't find sunflower seed flour so bought some kernels and made my own. I found the regular container made this flour meal just as well as this dry blade container did. Both were fast and effective. The regular container also made wheat flour, powdered sugar and other nut flours just fine. This container did a better job with coffee however.
Then, as long as I was experimenting, I decided to make my morning smoothie in this smaller container, and voila, it worked great, so I've been using this small one more for smaller quantities of things than because the blade is different.
All in all, I'm healthier because of the Vitamix which has proven its worth many times over. I like having the second smaller container and use it regularly, but not necessarily for dry processing since both blade types seem to handle the majority of things. I haven't used the recipe book (which didn't come with my container when I bought it some time ago) so I can't speak to that, but I do believe the container itself is a nice addition to my Vitamix, though not a requirement. One last note: the regular tamper also works with this container because of the tamper's graduated size and this container's smaller plug size.

Designed specifically for grinding grains with the Vita-Mix appliance, this large 32-ounce dry-blade container can be used as a replacement jar or a second jar. The see-through unit allows for keeping an eye on the process, while its hardened stainless-steel blades quickly and thoroughly grind. In addition to grinding fresh flour, it can also be used to grind beans, rice, and soybeans into flour for gluten-free recipes. A recipe book comes included. The container's drip-free spout ensures graceful pouring, and its raised calibrations make it easy to measure in ounces, cups, or metrics. The included two-part locking lid offers a secure spill-proof fit, removes easily, and vents to allow hot or cold food to expand and contract. The lid also supplies a removable measuring cap for adding ingredients during operation. Furthermore, the unit's made from Eastman Tritan copolyester material, which makes it virtually unbreakable, BPA-free, and more chemical resistant. The 32-ounce container measures 7-1/2 by 9 by 13-1/2 inches and carries a full five-year warranty.

KitchenAid Food Processors - (9 Cup) Review

KitchenAid Food Processors - (9 Cup)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Boy, am I glad I bought this processor. It is well designed and well made. You definitely get what you pay for.
The base unit is big (10" x 8" x 6" high) and heavy. But it is amazingly quiet. It has large rubber feet which prevent the unit from moving or vibrating on the counter. The motor has enough torque to mix or rip through anything dropped in it.
The work bowl is wider than the previous 9 cup model (7") which makes it very easy to work inside and remove the contents. Another nice touch is the bowl cover which fits over both the inside and outside rim of the work bowl to prevent spillage. The large food pusher is also a measuring cup. Many of the 12 cup accessories fit this processor, too.
The mini bowl accessory is useful because it easily drops into the large work bowl and then quickly chops small amounts of ingredients. The processor comes with the mini bowl & blade, dough blade, 2 mm slicing disk, 4 mm shredding disk and spatula. The booklet has 18 pages of well illustrated instructions (all English) and another 22 pages of recipes.
Final note: This item is securely packed in styrofoam. In addition, KitchenAid encloses the box inside a slightly larger shipping carton. This prevents the product and its box from being damaged during shipment from Amazon's warehouse - another nice touch.

With its 1/2-horsepower motor, this convenient food processor quickly and easily slices, dices, chops, and purees, helping to reduce prep time in the kitchen. Its durable sealed housing creates a sound barrier for quiet operation, while pulse control provides precision results when a light touch is needed. Ideal for making bread, the food processor combines medium capacity with full-size power and includes a dough blade that mixes and kneads yeast dough for pizza or bread.
Accessories include a 9-cup work bowl, a multipurpose stainless-steel blade, a large feed tube, and a full-size food pusher, as well as a 4-cup mini bowl with a multipurpose stainless-steel blade, a fine 2-mm slicing disc, a medium 4-mm shredding disc, and a spatula. Instructions and a recipe guide are also included. The base of the appliance wipes clean easily and the bowls, blades, and discs are dishwasher-safe for quick cleanup. Stylish and functional for today's busy kitchen, the food processor measures 10-1/2 by 14-1/2 by 8-9/32 inches and carries a one-year hassle-free replacement warranty.

L'Equip FilterPro Food Dehydrator Review

L'Equip FilterPro Food Dehydrator
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Nice unit, smartly designed and easy to use. I'm primarily making beef jerky, and trying different recipes is a lot of fun. I got unit for Christmas and have made 5 batches of jerky. Loved doing it and the jerky was I have to admit is very good.

That last batch of jerky was where my problem started, about an hour before the jerky was finished the dehydrator started completely losing power. Fan would shut off, the LEDs went off, but a rap on the side would get it to run for a while. I had to do this a couple of times got that batch of jerky finished.
I called Kitchen Resources (the number on the enclosed warranty information) and told them what was happening. They told me they would send me a new base (it was all I needed the rest is trays, lid, etc., no moving parts). Well a few days later a whole new units shows up, I swapped out the base units, (I really fought the urge to take additional trays). Retaped the box, used the supplied prepaid UPS shipping label and sent it back.

Kitchen Resources could not have made this any easier. With a 12 year warranty that is truely honored. Kitchen Resources should be proud of themselves and their products!

Emile Henry Flame Top Round Oven Review

Emile Henry Flame Top Round Oven
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had put off buying a dutch oven for quite some time, just because they are always SO heavy and SO expensive (the good ones, anyway).
I was at Sur la Table looking at dutch ovens when I lifted the lid off a Emile Henry Flame Top and very nearly threw the lid backwards over my shoulder because I expected it to be about twice as heavy as it actually was. I was dubious; a ceramic dutch oven? It was on sale so I bought it, thinking that I could return it if I didn't like it.
I don't like it. I LOVE it. So far everything has cooked absolutely perfectly in it. The ceramic retains and radiates heat better then metal, excellently searing pot roasts and then simmering evenly on the very lowest gas heat setting. If my Flame Top went missing today I'd buy another one without hesitation. This is 100% heirloom cookware: it's going to be in your family, being used, for a long time.
To address the complaint that the Flame Top retains odors, all I can say is that I never had this problem, but with two caveats. The first is that the reviewer didn't state if she seasoned her Flame Top as recommended by the manufacturer (instructions are both in the box and on the website). The ceramic glaze needs to be "set" by simmering either milk or water with dry rice in it before it's first real use. If this step is skipped and the pot is instead seasoned with tomato sauce, then I imagine there would be a problem. The second issue is that of tomato sauce in general. Highly acidic foods cooked in any lightly porous cookware are going to leave an odor behind, at least for a little while, that's why tomato-based sauces should always be cooked in steel. Like I said, I've cooked a range of stinky, odorous foods in my Henry pot and it doesn't smell at all.

J.A. Henckels International Classic Forged 7-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Set with Block Review

J.A. Henckels International Classic Forged 7-Piece Stainless-Steel Knife Set with Block
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Okay, so they are made in Spain rather than Germany...so what? These knives are a great starter set for anyone looking to "upgrade" from the dull knives they got as a hand-me-down or when they went off to college.
Chefs say that a safe knife is a sharp knife, and you just can't get that with inferior knives. This line by Henckels probably gets overlooked because you don't find it on the shelves of Williams-Sonoma, but they are just as good. Cutting is also faster with a well-balanced knife with some weight behind it, which this set has as well. I've added kitchen shears since I bought mine, and I'll probably add the utility knife, carving set and cleaver before I'm done. The knives you start with though are all you need. I find myself using just about all of them (except the boning knife) almost every day.
Two caveats though...don't put them in the dishwasher and don't forget to use the steel either before or after you use your knives. My sister put her knives (not Henckels, but of similiar quality) in the dishwasher on a consistant basis and the edges got nicked from all the banging around that goes on. Also, using the steel will keep you from having to have the knives professionally sharpened.

Sanyo ECJ-F50S Micro-Computerized 5-Cup Rice Cooker and Steamer Review

Sanyo ECJ-F50S Micro-Computerized 5-Cup Rice Cooker and Steamer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am Asian and eat rice everyday. I bought this rice cooker to replace my 8 years old National 8 cups white rice cooker/warmer,which is still working fine only it was too big for our family. We change to eat only brown rice now and the old one can not make brown rice as good as this new one. I did research many brands and found this one has the best comment and match my need.I only cook 2 cups at the time except when we have guests because I like my rice fresh and moist. This rice cooker keep rice warm and fresh for more than 24 hours, really!. I tried brown jasmine rice, brown basmati rice and white rice. They all came out best, so soft and plum. I love jasmine brown rice the most. Unlike the old one that cooking time was about 30 mins, but brown rice came out hard and uncooked even I put more water. I don't mind the fact that this new rice cooker cooking time is about 1 hour and 20 mins. I just start cooking rice first and do other dishes in the mean time. So everything is done and ready to eat.
I like the fact that this rice cooker does not make any noise when I push any button like other appliances. It won't make my 6 months old wake up. I like the set up time that allow me to have cooked fresh rice ready when we got back home from going out. The whole house smell so wonderful. Clean up is so easy. Although the inner lid is so thin and light compare to the National, but the cooking pan is so thick and heavy that should last a long time. It is very nice design and smaller than the round design.
I only use this rice cooker for cooking rice or sometimes season rice and it works best. I would highly recommend this product to anyone who love brown rice. If you only eat white rice, the cheaper one should be OK.

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Super Slicer Review

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Super Slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great all-around slicer. We've used it on very soft, moist cakes and breads - both soft and crusty.
But, thanks to a sharp edge and the length, it does a great job on meats. It breezes right through a London Broil and does a beautiful job slicing up an entire beef tenderloin into individual filet mignons. Sharp enough and long enough that you can usually complete a cut in a single stroke, providing a cleaner cut. I even tried it on a turkey last Thanksgiving and it worked great.
One really nice feature of this blade over many other slicers (including some other Wusthofs) is that it is scalloped on only one side, so you can still take it to a steel between professional sharpenings.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Super Slicer

The Classic cutlery line bears all the traits that Wusthof knives are known for: impeccable construction, incredible sharpness, and long-lasting durability. Each Classic knife is precision-forged--blade, bolster, and tang--from a single piece of high-carbon, stain-resistant steel. The blade is tested by lasers and honed by hand, with computer-controlled front-to-back tapering, grinding, and polishing. A visible full tang--the blade's shaft runs the entire length of the handle--ensures excellent balance and strength. Classic handles are molded from a durable black synthetic called Hostaform-C with traditional triple riveting. The knives promise a lifetime of hard-working companionship in the kitchen.

With the second longest blade in Wusthof's slicer line-up, the super slicer is the knife to reach for when slicing meats or fresh-baked bread. Instead of using standard pointed serration, the slicer's blade features reverse serration that, while unmistakably sharp, slices less aggressively for minimal tearing. Like the rest of the knives in the Classic collection, this one can go in the dishwasher. Wusthof recommends washing by hand, however, for maximum blade performance and long life.

Hamilton Beach Electrics All-Metal Stand Mixer Review

Hamilton Beach Electrics All-Metal Stand Mixer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this unit just over a month ago. It arrived in less than a week. I've had no problems with it yet. It is truly all metal except for the splash guard/ingredient chute. To address some other reviews that had me concerned. The head doesn't slap around. That is a warranty issue for her. It does walk with big stiff dough recipes such as a two loaf all wheat. Simple physics, considering size and weight, tells you at medium to high speeds it will. Kinda lets you know it is a powerful electronic speed controlled mixer. I can easily steady the base for the few seconds to finish mixing. All other mixing jobs are done with ease. I, personally, like the tilt head. All stand mixers will require side scraping with some recipes, even the expensive KitchenAids. Although I made a five bar cheesecake yesterday and as I was watching the eggs, dropped in at the side one at a time, they were all fully captured and mixed in. I usually scrape once at the beginning and it spins into a dough ball at the end anyway. There is a dimple at the bottom of the bowl to help pick up added flour during the mix. Speaking of KitchenAid, have you read the reviews of those "attachments"? Besides being expensive they say all of them suck. It seems you can buy better and cheaper items to do the same thing taking up the same amount of space.
So far I've made 4 loaves of baguettes, 4 loaves of wheat, 2 loaves of sourdough, numerous cakes, batches of cookies, and of course a large cheesecake since I've had it with no problems. (Now you can see why I needed a strong stand mixer! My church loves me now too!) The key is to read the instructions more than once to ensure you understand how to operate this model. It has some cool recipes in there too! And yes, it is very easy to clean as well.
If you want a mixer to crank out mega-loaves of all wheat bread daily, (commercial), then this is not it. If you want to make great bread, dishes and pastries for your family then this can't be beat at this price range with this much power. After all, as one consumer already stated, this is a "Consumer Reports best buy". I've had a Sunbeam Heritage, (like the one shown on the Cookin In Brooklyn show), and contrary to popular belief there is NOT a motor under the bottom pedestal. It's great for everything else but gluttonous bread dough's. A white loaf every once in a while, maybe. But, I wanted to be more artisan and organic with my breads so I upgraded.
Note: the short time I've had it is the only reason I've given it 4 stars. For me, longevity counts as one star.

Shun Classic Left-Handed 9-Inch Stainless-Steel Bread Knife Review

Shun Classic Left-Handed 9-Inch Stainless-Steel Bread Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This bread knife feels solid. The blade does not flex like my old bread knife. The knife is balanced and sharp. I cut easily through light fluffy bread as well as through heavy crusty sour dough breads. I did not expect such a difference between my old serrated edge bread knife and this Shun Kershaw Bread knife. I like the left-handed version. The knife also looks great. It has a good weight to it too. I plan to cut tomatoes and other fruit with it too. I am happy with this knife.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Shun Classic Left-Handed 9-Inch Stainless-Steel Bread Knife

Made from VG-10 stainless steel, Shun knives are specially constructed to be harder, less brittle, but also more flexible than traditional steel formulations. The VG-10 core is then clad with 16 full layers of SUS410 high-carbon stainless steel on each side, for a total of 33 layers. These layers not only protect the VG-10, they create an exquisitely detailed surface reminiscent of Damascus or pattern-forged steel, the kind once used for Samurai swords. As a result, the knives are simply stunning to look at--much like antique Damascus knives but without their tendency to rust. The 9-inch serrated blade of this left-handed bread knife comfortably accommodates everything from rustic artisan breads to baguettes--even dessert items such angel food cake or chocolate tart. Like many Asian-style knives, the knife's handle is especially suited to smaller users. In contrast to the traditional round profile, however, Shun's are D-shaped to prevent the knife from twisting in the hand, which provides extra stability and a firm grip. The handle is made from ebony-colored PakkaWood, a fused blend of hardwood veneers imbued with waterproof resin that combines the warmth and traditional look and feel of wood with the strength and durability of plastic. The offset stainless steel bolster is designed for ergonomic comfort and maximum safety, while a stainless-steel end cap provides the finishing touch. Hand washing the knife is recommended. The bread knife measures approximately 14 by 2 inches and carries a limited lifetime warranty. --Mary Park

All Clad Ovenware 14 x 7 x 3 Loaf Pan Review

All Clad Ovenware 14 x 7 x 3 Loaf Pan
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've purchased all of the All-Clad bakeware assortment and I am quite sure that each piece will outlast me. They are a joy to use, though I miss blaming poor results on my bakeware instead of 'user error'.
First the pros: this isn't your lightweight variety stainless steel. Each piece is substantial and does an excellent job of heating evenly/quickly. The handles on the bakers are particularly handy (pun intended), and keep your hands out of pies/cakes,etc. Everything is securely riveted and will stand up to rigorous use.
The cons: Steep price tag, the handles riveted to the inside of the pan aren't smooth or flush with the interior. Perhaps I am being nitpicky here, but for the mint that these cost, I expected impeccable fit and finish. Despite this, I'd still buy these again, (in fact, I bought several of each variety for entertaining larger crowds).
If you're in the market for new or upgraded bakeware/ovenware, these are excellent from baking to presentation. If you consider the price too steep, just figure the cost of these over the lifetime that they will last you, (and you're children's children).

Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife Set Review

Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife Set
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are really two main competitors in the high-end mainstream kitchen knife market: Henckels and Wusthof. Those who have used both usually have a preference. My preference (and therefore bias you should know about) is for the Wusthofs.
The Wusthof Classic line is the more conservative counterpart to the Grand Prix line. The only difference, however, is the handle style. I personally prefer the Grand Prix, but this is an issue of personal preference. The balance and grip of these knives are as close to perfect as I have found. For those wondering what benefits a higher priced knife provides, one benefit is that the blade (or tang) is one piece all the way through the handle. This makes the blade much stronger, and less likely to snap.
This set includes an 8 inch chef's knife, a 3 ½ inch paring knife and a 6 inch sandwich knife.
The 8 inch chef's knife, is a great knife. Wusthof offers four sizes of chef's knives in the Classic line, 5, 6, 8 and 10 inch. For most home cooks, I think the 8 inch knife is the best choice. The 5 and 6 inch are a bit small for bigger jobs, but the 10 inch is too big for most jobs. While the 8 inch isn't perfect for all uses, if you are only buying one size chef's knife (and most people only buy one), this is the one I would recommend.
As for the 3 ½ inch paring knife, this knife falls into the category of overkill for me. Most cooks will get by just fine with the 4 ½ inch utility knife. There is really no notable difference in size for the vast majority of applications between the 3 ½ inch paring knife and the 4 ½ inch utility knife. I prefer the 4 ½ inch utility knife, but the 3 ½ inch paring knife will do the trick.
I have found very few uses for the 6 inch sandwich knife. I prefer the larger size of the chef's knife or the smaller 4 ½ inch utility knife. This knife is just the wrong width and length for most tasks.
This set is a good deal; however, if compiling a set myself, I would include the chef's knife, the 4 ½ inch utility knife, and the 9 inch bread knife. Judge for yourself.

Click Here to see more reviews about: Wusthof Classic Gourmet 3-Piece Knife Set

The 8-inch cook's knife, an essential kitchen tool, is the centerpiece of this useful collection. It performs a wide variety of cutting tasks, from fine chopping to dicing and slicing. The relatively small size and sharp point of the set's paring knife make it ideal for handheld and other small or intricate cutting chores, such as vegetable peeling or mincing small quantities of herbs. The thin, narrow blade of the 6-inch sandwich knife plus its flared tip make it best for slicing sandwiches, meat, and fruit. A knife collection in itself, the set also makes a fine start for the cutlery collector.

Part of the Classic series, these knives represents two centuries of unexcelled Wusthof craftsmanship. Like other cutlery in the series, they're hand-forged from a single piece of stainless steel for maximum strength; the hand-polished blades are exactingly calibrated to be hard enough to resist dulling yet soft enough to take a keen edge when they're honed or sharpened. Dishwasher-safe and with traditionally shaped, ergonomically designed handles that are triple-riveted for durability, this set bring a guaranteed lifetime of low-maintenance cutting to its owners.

Friedr. Dick Premier WACS 8-1/2-Inch Bread Knife Review

Friedr. Dick Premier WACS 8-1/2-Inch Bread Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If I was just reviewing this knife for myself, I'd only give it three stars. I'll explain why, but I think most people would like it just fine, if you ever managed to get past the sticker shock, that is.
Pros:
Excellent materials, including German steel that "rings" like it's auditioning for a Johnny Depp swashbuckler. Proper forged bolster, nicely-riveted handle, great blade curvature, lovely weight and balance.
The teflon is a nice touch, especially for soft, damp breads and non-bread items - this is an excellent tomato knife, for example. The blade also has a really nice extra-sharpened tip.
Cons (my three particular nit-picks first):
I make big, crusty loaves that the knife is sometimes a little too short for.
The scallops are only on one side of the blade, meaning that it doesn't naturally cut straight and is right-handed only, which the description doesn't mention. For the dexterous majority, that's no problem, but for us sinister types, it's a fairly big deal.
I find it too shallow, sometimes scraping my knuckles on the work counter when using thin cutting boards.
I'm not sure how durable the Teflon is: when I did the Johnny Depp "ring" test, I managed to put a ding in it, though I wasn't being remotely rough (or remotely swashbuckling, for that matter).
And finally, back to the sticker shock. I happily shelled out a similar amount for my big Henckels chef's knife, but it's rarely out of my hand when I'm in my kitchen. After writing this, I checked Cooks Illustrated (the definitive source for comparative equipment reviews). They didn't particularly like the (significantly cheaper) F. Dick model they tested, for many of the same reasons I mention above (making me feel simultaneously smug and unnecessary), saving most of their praise for a 10" Victorinox that sells for chump change.
This one would probably work best as a rather spectacular gift, especially if you accidentally left the receipt in the box.

Fully forged, perfectly balanced, and ergonomically shaped, this 8-1/2-inch bread knife from Friedr. Dick's Premier WACS line is specially developed for edge retention and easy sharpening--perfect for both professional and home-based chefs. Adhering to the high specifications of the World Association of Chefs' Societies (or WACS), the Premier WACS line features a hygienic, antibacterial non-stick coating that effectively prohibits food to stick to it. And thanks to the ceramic particles in the coating, it's highly wear resistant and reduces cutting effort. The knife is complemented by a plastic handle with a stylish mother-of-pearl finish.
Produced from a single piece of red-hot steel under high pressure without any welding, the forged blade, bolster and full tang are optimized for weight distribution. Starting with high-carbon stainless steel, the Premier WACS line undergoes a special hardening technique with the addition of the X 45 Cr Mo V15 alloy--with chromium strengthening the steel against wear and tear, molybdenum giving it resistance to corrosion, and carbon providing absolute hardness. The blade is then ice-hardened for long edge retention, and laser angle-measuring equipment is used to check whether the optimum grinding and honing angle has been achieved.
The handle is made from high-quality, durable, food-safe plastic, and it's designed with a comfortably ergonomic finger guard at the end. A special manufacturing technique results in the blade and the handle being tightly linked so that not even the finest crack or gap is left. Unlike traditional knives with a handle housing, it is impossible for food residue or liquids to penetrate.
Manufactured in Germany, every Friedr. Dick finished knife is sharpened and honed by hand--just as it's been done since the company's founding in 1778 by Johann Friedrich Dick--and each knife is given the unmistakable Friedr. Dick etching. While this Friedr. Dick knife is dishwasher safe, it's recommended that you hand wash it using a mild dishwashing soap; rinse with water and dry thoroughly with a towel. Backed by a lifetime warranty.

Dune Lines color and texture is inspired by the desert where the wind draws unique formations in the fine sand. Thus it is with the wavy relief drawn through the surface of each flat plate. It is the feminine counterpart to the New Wave collection: the shape and design are structured in an organic flowing manner. There are two different variations in the pattern: plates that are round without any recognizable transition between the center and the rim and the modified oval plate with sensuously sweeping edges. This wavy relief, uniquely placed in the center of each flat piece, completes the unusual styling .As with all Villeroy & Boch dinnerware, it is dishwasher and microwave safe.
