Alessi Blow Up Basket Review

Alessi Blow Up Basket
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Alesi Blow Up Basket is a unique and artistic basket design which can be useful as well. We like the basket and plan to use it as a fruit basket or a bread basket with a napkin lining. I am disappointed in some of the workmanship with respect to inconsistency among some the welds used to hold the metal "sticks" together. Fortunately, this problem only is visable upon inspection and generally would not be noticed. However, since the basket is a work of art, it is likely to attract more than a casual glance from some people, and therefore, the weld inconsistancy causes me to rate the product below 5 stars.

Tramontina 7-pc. Professional Series Cutlery Set with Block
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this knife set for 5 years and I still love it. The knives more than hold their own against much more expensive ones, and are immensely well suited for serious prep work. True story: I took the chef's knife to a "knife skills" cooking class at the local culinary school, and the teacher absentmindedly picked it up and began using it instead of her (fabulous and expensive) Wustoff model. After she used my knife for several demonstrations she realized her mistake and remarked how much she liked using it. When I told her how inexpensive it was, she was stunned. As with any good knives, you do need to take care of these by using the steel regularly to maintain the edge, and they should be professionally sharpened every year or two. Also, they should be washed by hand (soak them for a few minutes in hot soapy water, and they'll clean right up). You simply can't do better for the money with these knives and I wouldn't trade them for anything.

Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RKG25H0XWH 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White Review

Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RKG25H0XWH 5-Quart Stand Mixer, White
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been doing a lot of research on KitchenAid Mixers. Below is some information I felt may be of use to others trying to decide on a new KitchenAid Mixer.
If you have questions regarding a KitchenAid Mixer or other KitchenAid product, the KitchenAid Forums are a good place to start. The questions are answered by users and KitchenAid Employees. KitchenAid Employees will have "KitchenAid" in front of their name ex. "KitchenAid_Sally"
To find the forums go to the KitchenAid Website, select "Customer Service" at the top, then select "Join KitchenAid Conversations" at the bottom of the page, then select "View all topics". There is a forum just for Stand Mixers. You can also try this address: forum.kitchenaid.com. You will find instructional videos and information on model numbers, accessories, features, adjustments, etc. There are user tips and recipes too. You must sign up for the forums to submit a question.
Is a standard model like the Artisan all I need?
The Artisan is good for basic mixing jobs (light bread doughs, single batches, etc). It is also easier to move around and store in a cabinet due to its size compared to a pro model. So, if you don't plan on doing any mixing beyond the basics in single batches and or need something compact that can be more easily moved around, the Artisan may be a good choice.

Why Go Pro?

The pro models have bigger motors, all-steel gears, and a more durable build that can handle large (double +) batches, heavy bread doughs, and certain attachments that could cause non-pro models to bog down and overheat while mixing or strip their plastic gears. The PowerKnead(tm) spiral dough hook is not recommended for non-pro models. The "Heavy Duty" features of the pro models do add some extra weight and noise. The pro models are bowl-lift which means the bowl moves up and down, but the mix head is fixed. This can be an advantage if you leave the mixer on the counter under a cabinet. The mixer can be operated from where you place it. A tilt-head may not have enough clearance when tilted up, and it might be more difficult to operate without moving the mixer.
What's the difference? Pro HD, Pro 5+ and Pro 600
The differece between the KG25 (Professional HD) and the similar KV25 (Professional 5 Plus Series), is basically just the mixing bowl design. The KG25 has a narrower and taller bowl then the KV25. The KV25 has the newer wide bowl design which is the same width as the 6qt bowl on the Pro 600 just not as deep. Other then that, there is not much difference. The Pro 600 is the Pro 5+ with a bigger motor and bowl. The Pro 600 and Pro 5 plus can even share bowls. They all share internal parts, so they should be equal as far as build quality. For more parts info, you can go to PartSelect and lookup Whirpool model KG25H-4 (Kitchenaid is a division of Whirlpool). Many of the parts are cross referenced as the same parts for the 5 plus, Pro HD and Pro 600. The site also provides the service schematics.
Personal Choice
I originally ordered the RKG25H0XWH, but I then decided on the Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid RKV25G0XWW Professional 5 Plus Bowl Lift Stand Mixer, White on White for an extra $40. Basically I chose the KV25 for the wider bowl, a little broader selection of attachments, and the ability to use the 6qt bowl from the Pro 600. KA has released a 3qt bowl and whip combo(KN3CW)that fits the KG25/KV25/Pro600 - Note: this item is currently only available through William Sonoma. When I got mine I had to ask for it. There was no display in the store. Do a search for "combi" to find it on the website. The KG25 CAN NOT use the 5 or 6 quart bowls that fit the KV25 and Pro600.

With 450 watts of power and a 5-quart bowl capacity KitchenAid's Professional 5 Plus stand mixer tackles big jobs. This factory-reconditioned machine prepares food for a crowd and ably handles tough mixes. Its body features durable die-cast metal construction and offers a direct-drive transmission and all-metal gears. The sturdy lifting mechanism uses a metal arm and steel lever to effortlessly raise an ingredient-filled bowl. The bowl itself features stainless steel construction, two pins to attach to the lifting arm, and an ergonomically designed handle for comfort during use.
Ten speeds allow for everything from whipping egg whites to slow churning bread dough and the Soft-Start feature keeps power in check to prevent splashing and flour clouds. A unique mixing action spins the beater clockwise while the shaft spins counter clockwise; this results in an even blend. As a safety measure, the motor stops in the event of an obstruction or overloading. An integrated hub cover with hinge flips up to allow easy installation of attachments. A flat beater, wire whip, and dough hook come with purchase; additional pieces such as a citrus juicer or sausage stuffer can be purchased separately. The machine measures 16-1/2 by 12 by 14 inches, comes in a range of colors, and includes a 6-month warranty. Pop the bowl and beater in the dishwasher for cleaning and wipe the main body with a warm damp cloth.

I received this mixer yesterday for Christmas from my kids. Then I read the above review and I got a little aprehensive. Today I telephoned this number 1-800-541-6390 to ask about the attachments for this model mixer. She answered several questions and she gave me the numbers of appliance models that are compatible with the K4SS mixer. The wire whip model number is K5AW. The attachments with model numbers KSM500 and K5SS will all fit the K4SS mixer. Hope this helps.

Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid Heavy-Duty Mixer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have this refurbished model in the Imperial Gray. It is a nice-looking addition to my countertop. For most projects, it does an excellent job! HOWEVER, the manual was excessively optimistic in its claims that this mixer can knead two loaves of wheat bread dough! Be aware that the gears are all NYLON, and the motor is plenty strong enough to strip the gears when it lugs down on stiff wheat dough. I have done so THREE TIMES now. Kitchenaid is now marketing a 6-quart "professional" model with all steel gears and a circuit breaker ... If you are going to buy a Kitchenaid mixer for real bread, go the extra mile for the tougher model. ...

I did a lot of checking and lifting of various dutch ovens/casseroles/stew pots by Le Creuset, Staub, Emeril Lagasse, and many others. But when I picked this 6.3 quart oven, I was pleasantly surprised to find how much lighter it is than the others. I bought it from Amazon and cooked with it the other night, and the results were delicious. I cooked everything on a gas stove. It browns meat very well, retains heat evenly, and the braising dish that I made came out perfect. All of my guests ate in silence to enjoy the meal and they usually don't do that! I also bought it because it can be used both on the stove and in the oven. I look forward to using it often. Highly recommend it!

Hearthware Home Products NuWave Pro Infrared Oven model 20322

(More customer reviews)
My husband is the cook at our house, and he uses this every day for one meal or another. It cooks everything from Steak to potatos and greenbeans in no time. He just grabs the food from the freezer, layers it around the NuWave, and starts it up. 20 min later dinner is ready. You can cook the main dish on one level and the veggies on another so you have one "pot" to clean up after dinner. It comes apart easily for cleaning and has a beep to alert you that your food is ready that is loud enough to be heard on the next floor. You should also know that it is easy to get replacement parts for the body if you use it enough to wear them out.

Wusthof Ikon Cook's Knife, Blackwood Review

Wusthof Ikon Cook's Knife, Blackwood
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

I have knives from the Henckels Pro-S, Sabatier Grand Chef, Wusthof Classic, and Shun lines. I was curious to try the new Wusthof Ikon line, and I have to say, I'm hooked. There is a substantial premium over the regular Classic line of knives, but I'd have to say it's worth it.
Aesthetically, the new design is more pleasing, and has modern, flowing lines. The classic Wusthof red sticker is formed into the blade itself, so no more of the sticker coming off during washing! Also, the tang extends all the way to the bottom of the handle, ending in a sleek metal cap. Lastly, the bolster is much thinner, making the knife easier to sharpen.
Out of the box, my Ikon was as sharp as my Shun Nakiri. A few swipes on my steel made it even more so. After an hour of cutting, I greatly appreciated the new ergonomically designed handle. It really makes prepping much more comfortable. The overall balance is skewed slightly towards the handle, but not noticeably so.
In conclusion- a great update on the Classic line, with functional improvements. This is now the first knife I reach for from my block.

A true chef's companion, this versatile 8-inch cook's knife by Wusthof works well for a variety of food-prep tasks. Use it for chopping carrots and onions to throw into a stew, for slicing summer-ripe fruit to add to a salad, for mincing fresh herbs from the garden, and more. The everyday knife, which measures approximately 12 by 2 by 1 inches, makes easy work of chopping, slicing, dicing, and mincing a wide array of ingredients.

As part of the Wusthof Ikon collection, the knife comes precision forged from a single piece of high-carbon steel to ensure outstanding strength and balance. Laser tested for accuracy, the unique, compound angle of the blade tapers from the spine of the knife to the edge to create a sturdy, yet extremely sharp cutting surface. It also tapers from the bolster to the tip to give the knife enhanced strength and flexibility. Even more, Wusthof knives offer sharp, precisely tempered blades that allow the knife to hold its edge for an extremely long time (while still being easy to maintain). Another thoughtful detail includes the full-tang handle, which comes riveted for strength; ergonomically designed for a secure, comfortable grip; and handcrafted from African Grenadill wood (African Blackwood)--one of the hardest types of wood, which expands and contracts less than most traditional woods. Ikon knives also feature a rear bolster that acts as a counter balance during use for added control, as well as a forward bolster that makes it possible to sharpen the complete length of the blade. Made in Solingen Germany, "The Cutlery Capital of the World", Wusthof knives carry a limited lifetime warranty and should be hand washed for best results.
From the Manufacturer
In the culinary world variety and preparing something outstanding is the key to success. Due to this, Wusthof offers more than 350 different kinds of knives to be able to provide the perfect knife for everyone. No matter which kind of blade and handle shape you are thinking of--Wusthof has the right knife for all your needs.

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 15-3/4-by-10-3/4-Inch Rectangular Baking Dish, Cobalt Blue Review

Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 15-3/4-by-10-3/4-Inch Rectangular Baking Dish, Cobalt Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a classically trained chef, I have an extensive collection of kitchen items not always found in a typical home. I tend to think of kitchen products from a professional point of view, although I enjoy many items made for home use. Le Creuset is uncommon in professionally kitchens; however they manufacture quality and effective products.
Le Creuset's porcelain enameled cast iron cooking vessels are cast from molten iron formed in single use sand moulds. Covering cast iron with porcelain enamel not only looks good, but has multiple benefits. The enamel, being a solid coating, is one of the most hygienic surfaces to cook on, does not stain, absorb odors, retain flavors, and is easy to clean eliminating the need for seasoning and preventing rust issues. Limit cooking tools to plastic or wood to prevent damaging the enamel.
Cast iron is a highly efficient material which absorbs and distributes heat efficiently. For this reason, it is recommended to use on low to medium heat. There are a few exceptions like boiling water where cooking on high heat is appropriate and okay. Otherwise, cooking with high heat may cause food to stick, discolor the enamel coating, or unevenly cook the food. Cast iron also retains heat, keeping food warm while serving.
The benefits of cooking with Le Creuset cast iron are many, but let's get down to the roasting pan specifically. This pan holds 5 1/4 quarts of food, measures 9 3/4 x 14 x 3 inches internally, and weighs 10.2 pounds. 5 1/4 quarts will typically feed 8 - 10 people when it comes to casseroles, consider the rectangular baker for smaller recipes. Except for roasts, the roasting pan tends to do best if at least 3/4 full. Any less and you may overwhelm your food with the pan's evenly dispersed heat.
I find the many benefits of Le Creuset make this pan a worthy purchase. This pan adds a desirable crispy texture to dishes like mac-n-cheese. Add the Le Creuset 9 by 11-1/2 inch roasting rack for roasting chickens and pork loins keeping them out of the grease. Some other possibilities for this pan include casseroles, deep dish pizza, pork chops covered with cornbread dressing, dinner rolls, baked squash, lasagna, scalloped potatoes, cobblers, pineapple upside down cake, or bread pudding. The enamel is attractive, while the cast iron keeps the food warm for serving. Cleaning and caring for this dishwasher safe pan is easy. When properly taken care of, this pan will last a lifetime.
One feature that people tend to complain about is the cost. The cost does seem steep compared to other pans made from other materials. Heck, cast iron doesn't seem like it should be expensive when comparing to that old cast iron pan past generations have used for cornbread and camping. However the manufacturing process requires making a mould for each and every pan produced. They then go through the enameling process before shipping these heavy pans. If you take what goes into making and distributing these high quality cast iron products, the cost tends to make sense. Then consider that this pan will easily last a lifetime when taken care of.
Knowing the benefits and the pleasure I get from using Le Creuset, I don't hesitate to recommend this pan. Purchase this pan and use it for its strengths, you won't be disappointed.
PROS:
Efficient absorption and distribution of heat
Hygienic enamel cooking surface
Does not stain, absorb odors, or retain flavors
Easy to clean when not abused or misused
Can be transferred from stove top to the oven to the table
Dishwasher safe
Can easily last a lifetime
CONS:
Its heavy, as cast iron tends to be weighing in at about 10.2 pounds

Click Here to see more reviews about: Le Creuset Enameled Cast-Iron 15-3/4-by-10-3/4-Inch Rectangular Baking Dish, Cobalt Blue

Excelled in evenly distributing and efficiently retaining heat, this enameled cast-iron baking dish with its sleek, low profile makes a useful and versatile addition to any busy kitchen. The rectangular-shaped roaster measures approximately 15-3/4 by 10-3/4 by 2-2/3 inches and can hold up to 5-1/4 quarts. Use it for a variety of home-cooked meals--from oven-roasted chicken breasts and homemade lasagna to casseroles or even a side of roasted new potatoes.
Like other pieces in Le Creuset's line of enameled cast iron, the cookware's exterior features a colorful, long-lasting enamel that resists chipping and cracking, while its durable, nonreactive sand-colored enamel interior offers a smooth surface for cooking and an optimal palette for food presentation. As cast iron is unexcelled for even heat distribution and superior heat retention, and enamel is impervious to acids and odors, the baking dish cooks food uniformly and gently without hot spots and can be used for marinating, cooking on the stovetop, or finishing in the oven. The cookware also provides integral side handles for a secure grip, and it can be safely used at any oven temperature, under the broiler, and on any stovetop, including induction. Best of all, it moves gracefully from the oven to the table for serving to the refrigerator or freezer for storing leftovers after a family dinner, party, or holiday meal. The rectangular roaster should be hand washed for best results and carries a lifetime limited warranty.

Cuisinart DLC-5BK 7-Cup Capacity Food Processor Review

Cuisinart DLC-5BK 7-Cup Capacity Food Processor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Perhaps you are thinking, "Do I really need a food processor?" The answer is, "Yes!"
Twenty years ago I bought the same model as this one and it has seen daily use and is still running strong! I thought I wouldn't really use it that much, but once you start using it you find that it makes food preparation so much quicker that soon you can't do without it! Not only is it great for slicing and chopping, but it is also great for preparing bread dough (no more hand kneading!), pureeing, and making peanut butter.
The only time I use a blender instead of the food processor is when I'm pureeing a large amount of liquid (like a hot soup), because it will leak out of the food processor.
Because of the food processor, I find that I make lots of recipes that I formerly wouldn't have because they used to take too much time.
Caution: The blades are razor SHARP! The first week I had my processor, I pulled bread dough off the blade without being very careful, and sliced off the top of my thumb! After 20 years, the blades are still very sharp. The work bowl is a bit scratched and dull, but after 20 years it's a miracle that it's still in one piece!
For my small family, the 7-cup capacity is just right. If I had a larger family, I might invest in one of the larger processors.

Folding Bakers Rack - Wrought Iron (Black Antique pewter) (58"H x 26"W x 14"D) Review

Folding Bakers Rack - Wrought Iron (Black Antique pewter) (58H x 26W x 14D)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The wrought iron folding backers rack is perfect for holding outdoor plants for display. If you have limited space the depth and width is great. Pros: The ability to fold compactly for storage during the off season (for those of us who have a snowy winter season), well built, flexibility in the sense that each individual shelf is on a hinge and you can choose to leave a shelf "down" to allow more room for a taller object. The shelf that you don't wish to use lies flat against the back and has a pretty backdrop for the plants in front of it. Large pots can fit on the bottom 2 shelves and all shelves can hold multiple pots.
Cons: There's not a lot of space between the top 2 shelves for a plant to grow upward,
One other note: the finish is holding up well to the rain so far. Time will tell if the finish will keep the wrought iron rust free.

Sharp 900-Watt 0.9 Cubic Foot Convection Microwaves Review

Sharp 900-Watt 0.9 Cubic Foot Convection Microwaves
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Given the tremendous functionality, and especially for the price, I cannot in good conscience give this oven less than 5 full stars. However, that is definitely not to imply that it is perfect. Nothing is, and this is no exception. So, while others here have done a fine job of highlighting the positive aspects (which is in fact why I bought one, too), I will try to provide a more balanced perspective. First, though, a quick re-cap of those highlights. Yes, this oven really does do the job of three: a conventional microwave, a convection unit, and a toaster oven. In fact, that does not do it justice because it does even more than that. You cannot, for example, grill a burger in any of those types, but you can in this. Especially for a small kitchen, this is phenomenally useful. In just a couple of weeks, I've already become reliant on its non-microwave functions for a variety of things, from roast chicken to frozen French fries, both of which come out better than in my conventional oven and in much less than half the time. And cleanup has not been an issue.
Still, there are flaws. Others have noted the wobbly turntable and difficult to read LCD display, and this is true - but I think there are more serious ones. I'll start with build quality since that was the first one I encountered. I've unfortunately had a chance to explore this in-depth, thanks to a broken fan assembly in mine. This was not shipping damage, either, but a manufacturing defect. In checking out the problem, I was able to examine things on the inside, it was clear that the unit is built to a very tight price point. There is an abundance of crimped sheet metal, a minimum number of screws, and cheap plastic snap-ins securing (barely) too many of the vital components. I'll also note that Consumer Reports has been reporting failure rates for Sharp built-in microwaves (the only variety they track reliability in) many times that of the other brands. That said, this unit replaced a Sharp countertop microwave which was still going strong at 13 years. Another weak point - this time of the design - is the ratio of exterior to interior space. In other words, the cavity is quite small for the amount of space the oven takes up, even compared to other convection units. In fact, my counter can just barely accommodate its depth. This is likely partially the result of its `economical' design. Also related to that, no doubt, is the omission of a doneness sensor, which I would expect on any microwave at this price, convection or not. This sensor is what allows a microwave to automatically reheat dishes, and shut off when it detects, through the amount of steam given off, that a dish is done heating. Instead, we are given reheat presets, which are never adequate (unless maybe you weigh your food first and configure it just right on the plate).
However, not all the preset programs are useless. In fact, much to my surprise, some are invaluable. I expected that all the co-called `Compu-` settings were simple time presets, but this is not the case. Many of these are fairly complex cooking routines, sometimes involving all three methods in various sequences. For example, the Compu-Roast 1 program will cook a darn good roast chicken automatically, using microwave, convection, and even the upper grill for browning near the end. The hamburger Compu-Grill program works similarly well, though I believe with just the 2 grills. (It is not always possible to tell what cooking mode is being used). These programs make it simple for even a mediocre cook like myself to begin using the oven instantly and with good results. And it prevents it from becoming merely an overpriced microwave (like my mother's KitchenAid has: it has convection and an upper grill, too, but no programs, so they remain unused after 2 years). Nonetheless, the presence of such helpful programs does not preclude it having a doneness sensor which is virtually a standard feature these days. Ideally, it would also have a linear power supply like the Panasonics do, allowing truly low-power microwaving, rather than simply cycling full power on and off to simulate low power operation. But not many other manufacturers do this, and that may be expecting too much. Finally, beware that this oven will draw more current than a comparably-sized microwave-only unit: up to 13 amps. This can tax a typical 15 amp household circuit if anything else is plugged in. Add a toaster, for example, and you will trip a breaker (I have).
To summarize, while the build quality is a concern, very few ovens I am aware of offer as much functionality to bake, roast, microwave and grill - and fewer still offer preset programs making all that flexibility readily accessible. None do it for so low a price. In fact, of the few other countertop convection microwaves I could find, nearly all were over three hundred dollars actual selling price. That makes this unique oven a bargain in several ways.
