Shun DM0705 Classic 9-Inch Bread Knife Review

Shun DM0705 Classic 9-Inch Bread Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My experience with bread knives had generally left me feeling that they are never particularly sharp, but make up for it with a toothy serrated edge that digs into food. When you're talking about bread that counts for a lot. Bread isn't exactly the toughest thing a knife has to deal with.
Based on that previous experience, this breadknife didn't look terribly impressive. The serrations are smooth and rounded rather than aggressive and toothy. It didn't look like something that would bite into bread. But I'd read a rave review of it, and everything else I read about Kai knives was overwhelmingly positive. I've also had very good luck with Japanese cutlery, so I thought I'd give it a shot.
It cuts like a laser. Slides right through breads and salami (which I end up using it for all the time) very smoothly and with very little effort. The blade is razor sharp, which I learned when I got a little careless (didn't used to have respect for breadknives, remember) and it sliced off the end of a fingernail without the slightest resistance. THAT left me very respectful. The gentle serrations let it dig into it's target without tearing or throwing loose a crumb. It also has a nice, meaty asymmetrical D-shaped handle that really fits in the palm. This may not be for everyone, so give it a whirl before you commit to buying, but I think it's great.
If you need a breadknife and want a quality piece (and if you get a good knife and take care of it you should only need to buy one, ever) this is the hands down obvious choice. It's a bit more expensive than the Major German Brand cutlery, but easily worth it.
As a general comment, I think anyone looking for good kitchen cutlery should consider the Japanese brands first. I've used knives from Global, Kai and Kasumi, and up against Henckels and Wusthof there is just no comparison. We have the Kai breadknife, a Kasumi chef's knife, a Henckel's 4-star chef, Henckel's 4-star santoku, Henckel's 4-star slicer, Wusthof Grand Prix utility, Wusthof Grand Prix parer, Wusthof Classic granton slicer, and a Kyocera ceramic chef's. When I look at the knife block I really just see the Kai breadknife, my Kasumi chef and Those Other Knives.
Any knife shopping I do in the future, I will be looking at Kai first. Kasumi is also an incredible brand, and a bit finer and sharper than Kai, but they run about 50% more. I got my Kasumi chef's as a gift, and it's a treasure, but if I were laying down my own money it's such a close call I'd probably go with Kai, especially since I prefer their handles.

This 9-inch Shun Classic bread knife offers the typical serrated blade, but is unique in that, while narrower than a standard German knife, it's so sharp and precise, that it can produce thick or thin slices of even the most crusty loaves and hearty artisan breads without leaving a lot of crumbs or broken crusts in its wake.

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Bread Knife Review

Wusthof Classic 10-Inch Bread Knife
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
It's a Wusthof Classic, so it's got all the weight, balance, comfort and precision sharpness of the great German line. This is a great choice for all amateur & aspiring chefs, and many professionals.
The purpose of this review is to urge any shopper investing in a Wusthof bread knife to go for the full 10" length -- it makes a positive difference in leverage as you slice, and easily clears the diameter of virtually any boule, ciabatta, and other artisan loaves. The same principle applies to roasts and other meats, if you use your serrated knives for carving.
The length doesn't diminish anyone's ability to slice tomatoes, panini or any other foods, either. If you're going to spend $100+ on a quality bread knife, make your money go further with the 10" model.

The pronounced serration of this knife's blade is ideal for cutting through tough crusts without undue pressure. The knife's length and triangular tip make it perfect for slicing both long and round loaves. Cooks frustrated by bread knives that tear crusts or send crumbs flying will welcome this efficient worker.

Like all knives in Wusthof's Classic series, the knife's blade, tang, and bolster come precision forged from a single piece of precisely tempered, high-carbon, stain-resistant steel. This tempering allows the knife to hold its edge for an extremely long time. Even more, it comes with a unique compound angle not seen in many knives. This angle tapers from the spine of the knife to the edge to allow for a sturdy, yet extremely sharp edge while it also tapers from the bolster to the tip to give the knife strength as well as flexibility. Traditional in look, Classic knives are seamlessly constructed with a visible full tang triple-riveted into an ergonomically-shaped synthetic handle. Though the knife is dishwasher-safe, Wusthof recommends hand-washing all fine cutlery. Made in Germany, the knife measures approximately 18 by 3 by 1 inches and carries a limited lifetime warranty.

Back to Basics TEM500PDWH Paula Deen Egg-and-Muffin Toaster Review

Back to Basics TEM500PDWH Paula Deen Egg-and-Muffin Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am extremely pleased with this toaster. The big selling points for me were:
1. The toaster poaches an egg (which is something I would not take the time to do normally, especially during the week).
2. It has the option to just toast or just cook an egg if you prefer.
3. It prepares food so that it's ready at the same time so it's all hot.
4. It's a big time saver.
True enough, you could make a breakfast sandwich with a skillet and regular toaster, but you could not poach an egg or boil and egg in that amount of time, and you would have to be actively involved in preparing the breakfast. I can start my breakfast with the push of a button and walk away until it is done. The meats I have used are Canadian bacon and Morning Star Sausage Patties and they come out perfectly.

KitchenAid 6-qt. Pro Line Stand Mixer, Onyx Black Review

KitchenAid 6-qt. Pro Line Stand Mixer, Onyx Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this stand mixer for a few months now and I was very excited when it came in the mail. It looks great in my kitchen - very sleek and a nice size. The mixer is very easy to operate and very powerful, I never really mix above speed 5 or so. The whip, dough, and paddle attachments (included with the mixer) secure very easily and stay secured when in use. After everything is secured in place, the lever on the right side (as pictured) is turned to bring the mixing bowl up and in place. The mixer works very well in mixing all ingredients together even if there is very little inside - but sometimes takes a while. The attachments mix all the way to the bottom of the bowl. A cookbook is included with instructions and recipes. The Kitchenaid brand is reliable and it compliments other Kitchenaid items in my kitchen!
The reason for the 4 stars:
The mixing bowl can be a little tedious to put in place, however. There's a little ding in the back that has to fit into a hole. Once it is secured, then the side holes go in. If the back isn't secured first, the mixing bowl is not in place and swings - and would shake loose while mixing. Also, some of the metal coating on the attachments come off (I had to peel back a little so it wouldn't get into my food). After soaking the dough hook (so I could wash it) for a couple hours, it stained with some splotches. When mixing dough with the dough hook for bread, the mixer works very hard (the bowl rattles and the machine gets hot). A few times while kneading dough, the mixer shorted out and stopped working. I had to turn it off, unplug it, let it cool, then start kneading again. The fact that it just stopped working is disconcerting because I'm scared it will just stop working one day.

KitchenAid GMA Grain Mill Attachment for Stand Mixers Review

KitchenAid GMA Grain Mill Attachment for Stand Mixers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This attachment reveals a design flaw in the Kitchenaid Mixer design. Inside every Kitchenaid Mixer you have a transmission/gearbox that drive both the mixer and the accessory drive shaft. This gearbox has a PLASTIC cover that holds all the gears in place.
The grain mill attachment places the *most* stress on your kitchenaid, more than any other attachment you can buy. What happens is when you're grinding wheat, it heats up that gearbox and the plastic cover starts to flex, and if you run it more than 10 minutes it'll heat up enough to break the plastic.
I bought this attachement for my wife for Christmas 2004. It broke the transmission and stripped the gears on the mixer in January. We removed the cover and saw the cracked plastic. Kitchenaid promptly sent a replacement mixer even though ours was "out of warranty". This tells me that they KNOW about their design flaw.
We got our shiny new Kitchenaid Mixer the next week. My wife took it out of the box, attached the grain mill and started it grinding flour. Within 10 minutes the plastic cover failed on the new one. Kitchenaid sent out a new one, again. We're now on our third mixer and we're looking to get a refund from Kitchenaid for the Grain Mill so we can go out and buy a real wheat grinder.
It's really sad. All Kitchenaid needs to do is put a metal gearbox cover on the transmission and you could grind wheat into flour non-stop. I can't believe that they're willing to stake their good name on a plastic part!

Proctor-Silex 25400 Meal Maker Sandwich Toaster Review

Proctor-Silex 25400 Meal Maker Sandwich Toaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recieved this item as a gift from my neighbors. It was a true gift because I would not have purchased something like this for myself. I eventually found many uses for this little electric grill. As mentioned in the editorial review above, this grill is useful for batter based foods as well as for making sandwiches. Because we prefer hot cake, I have found it very useful for making small snack cakes. Using a standard cake mix with ordinary preparation, the bottom half of the griddle can be filled with batter. The batter will expand to fill the top as it cooks. The additional batter can be refrigerated for use the next day. The same is true of corn bread, pancake mix, browny mix, etc. The best part is the fact that the cakes will cook in just a few minutes. Pre-heating takes only 3-5 mins, and cooking about 4-8 depending on what you are working with, considerable less than the time to bake in a full size oven. This unit is also a welcome addition to the arsenal when battling toddler pickyness. Small portions of various items can be quickly prepared with out heating a full size oven. The way that it seals the bread at the seems when making sandwiches makes it useful for making healthy homemade "hot pockets" for lunches, as you control the ingredients and leave the preservatives at the store. Cresent roll dough can be stretched, doubled-over and filled. Although they are somewhat atypically shaped you get perfect omlets every time, without flipping. Simply chop/shread cheese or vegies add to scrambled eggs and fill the bottom. Although this grill has an easy to clean non-stick surface, I found it useful to wipe with an oiled cloth prior to cooking, PAM or a similar product would also work well. The effort I save putting together quick healthy lunches and snacks using this device, I have transfered to planning and preparing more elaborate meals in the evening, or entertaining.

Chef's Choice International Professional Food Slicer Review

Chef's Choice International Professional Food Slicer
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you've ever owned or tried a "home" food slicer, you know they don't really work that well. This one does.
When I first got it, I tried slicing several items -- Pepperoni, bulk cheese (Cojack) and two different kinds of bread --regular "store" bread and a artisan loaf. The pepperoni came out in perfect, exactly the same thickness slices. The thickness knob did not slip, and the blade cut cleanly. My Cojack was perfect for grilled cheese sandwiches, and I got three even slices out of one slice of regular bread without tearing the bread! (That was a test to see what I could get away with). The artisan bread sliced perfectly for crostini. I sliced potatoes for potato chips, and they were all the same thickness,(actually, "thinness") and perfect for frying.
This aluminum and stainless steel German slicer is worth every penny you pay for it. The thickness adjustment knob stays where it's set, and the settings are repeatable, there's room under the blade for a large platter, the instant-on/off switch works perfectly, the motor is quiet and powerful, it's easy to clean and the slicer works exactly the way you always wanted a slicer to work--i.e., just like the one at the deli!
If you have the need, and room, for this rather large slicer, go for it! It's worth it.

Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixers Review

Factory-Reconditioned KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixers
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WOW! It's hard to believe the price on this incredible mixer-even considering it's reconditioned. Before making my purchase, I contacted KitchenAid's Support Center (a toll-free phone number for anyone to use)and wanted the bottom line of a "Factory-Reconditioned" Product. In my own personal experience, I've dealt with companies that had differing ideas on what they meant by "Reconditioned", "Refurbished", "Like New" and some others.
I wanted this review to be as useful as possible so I did as much research as I could, hopefully it will help you to make a more informed and comfortable decision. The wonderful and personable customer service representatives as KitchenAid were very helpful in answering a list of questions that I had prepared. I already had the mixer but wanted to make certain that the information I was passing on to you was as up to date as possible. They reassured me that when they put the "Factory-Reconditioned" stamp of approval on the KitchenAid RRK150WH Artisan 5-Quart Mixer they're basically saying that you're getting a brand new-ish machine that has met or exceeded every standard necessary to place the original product on the shelves in the first place. I followed up with another question, "So how can that be since it IS different for whatever reason?" They gracefully explained that every KitchenAid Appliance must meet several strict standards (appearance, safety, etc.), standards that are manually checked and rechecked by actual quality control people in the factory, before they will place it for sale as reconditioned. I asked what the number one reason was for these great machines, and they really ARE great and powerful mixers, to be returned to the store or factory. The main reason is that most returns are a result of people receiving the 5-Quart Mixer as a gift (Wedding Shower, Wedding, Anniversary, New Home, etc.)and deciding that they already have one or that they don't have the need for a new mixer. As a result, the product is returned, often never opened, to the retail store and then shipped back to the factory.
KitchenAid gets FIVE STARS, in my books, for never assuming anything. Even if the tape is still securing the box, the unit is removed completely and sent through the entire quality control process-each and every part of the Mixer is scrutinized. If, as another example, a customer returns a unit because one of the covers is missing, the same lengthy process is taken to ensure that NOTHING leaves the factory with the "Factory-Reconditioned" status unless they can stand by the product in the same way they do with the original.
With a unit priced this low, it's hard to imagine that anyone is making a great deal of money on the deal. This is one case where I would tend to believe that we, the curious consumers, are definitely getting the best part of the bargain.
I'm Italian and love to cook and love to bake. My family used to do almost everything by hand, but then I purchased the KitchenAid 5-Quart Mixer and my life changed. I will NEVER make another loaf of bread or knead pizza dough, not even for $10,000.00, after learning that this dependable machine does a much better job than myself and even my Grandma can do! The other part of baking that I am not excited to partake in is the cleaning process. Thankfully, the colorful and trendy-looking mixer is as easy to clean as is cleaning a bowl of popcorn! It's honestly that easy and a point that I wanted to pass onto you.
I sure hope that this review helps in some way. I've not covered all of the nitty gritty details, most all of them are found here on the site or can be located on KitchenAids extensive and resourceful site. What I wanted to do is personalize this purchase for you and focus on what they mean, as an individual company, in regard to a product that is not brand new-but is "Factory-Reconditioned!"
I've spent this same amount of money and much more on items I never ended up using. And even if you're the type of baker who only does baking on Holidays, you'll absolutely love your KitchenAid Artisan Series 5-Quart Mixer. Choose your favorite color and mix and blend until your heart and tummy are content.
And feel free to email me if I can ever be of any more assistance to you. Thanks for taking the time to read my review.

Back to basics Hand Grain mill Review

Back to basics Hand Grain mill
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had this grinder for MANY years (about 12 I think). I don't use it real often, as it is slow work. I use a NutriMill electric grinder for my everyday flour grinding. But when we want corn bread or cream of wheat or rice, this hand grinder does the best! This meal does a great job of making a true course corn meal and farina/ "cream of ..." cereals. (You'll never want cornbread with storebought cornmeal again, once you've tasted fresh ground.)
For those things that don't require a large amount of grain meal, and that you don't do everyday, this is a great mill. For daily grinding of flour for several loaves of bread - I wouldn't do it.
Another reason I like having this on hand is if we'd ever be out of electricity, and I couldn't use my NutriMill.

Sensio 13267 Bella Cucina Nonstick Panini Grill

(More customer reviews)
I bought this particular panini press due to the small size, which was important to me b/c I don't have alot of kitchen storage. It is perfect for 2 sandwiches. It has a great non-stick coating which is super easy to clean. I wipe it down with a wet paper towel. So far I have only used it on the highest heat setting and it works fast and produces perfectly crunchy sandwiches on the outside and warm, melted ingredients on the inside. It's also very attractive with its highly polished chrome exterior.
My only negative points and the only reason I did not give it 5 stars: The plastic lock (which holds the top and bottom together for easier moving/storage) is difficult to latch and does not stay put. The plastic drip tray is a bit flimsy. And so far, in my experience, the heating light does not work properly. It stays on all of the time instead of indicating "ready". But that is not really a problem for me as I can tell when its hot (only takes a few minutes).
I admit, this is my first panini maker. I read alot of reviews here on Amazon before choosing this one based soley on its size. And I seem to be the first to review this one. It was between this one and a George Foreman grill. And once I touched the GF grill in person at a store, I didn't like it. Trust me, this is a much better quality appliance and well worth the money! So overall, I would highly recommend it!

Make healthy, delicious hot sandwiches with this easy-to-use panini grill. The countertop appliance features a non-stick grilling surface, which means there's no need for butter or oil--cooked food slides effortless off the grill and onto a serving plate. Thick, crusty breads like Italian, French, or focaccia work best for panini sandwiches; the appliance can also be used to grill vegetables, pork chops, fish, and more. Simply place food on the grill, lower the lid, and adjust the temperature as needed by turning the dial from low to high heat settings. Once food has fully cooked or sandwiches have turned a crispy golden brown, remove from the grill and enjoy. The grill provides a red "power" and a green "ready" indicator light for foolproof operation. Other highlights include a chrome-plate cover, a generous lid handle, a slide-out drip tray for quick cleanup, handy cord wrap when not in use, and a sleek design that will fit in well with any kitchen collection. The panini grill measures 13-1/4 by 10-4/5 by 4-2/3 inches and carries a one-year limited warranty.

I love this mixer!! I began researching the countertop mixers after reading the poor reviews on the KitchenAid. This mixer works wonderfully! I use spouted whole grain flour to make everything from cookies to bread; it is a very heavy and dense flour to work with, but no problem for this mixer at all. I even made sprouted whole grain oatmeal raisin chip cookies and it mixed all the ingreidents very quickly and perfectly. This receipe used to bog down my old hand mixer and I would end up mixing by hand...forever. This is a wonderful machine and I am so glad I bought it. FYI, it is heavy, but has wheels in the base that allow you to roll it accross the counter.

DeLonghi DSM5 5-Quart Stand Mixer, Stainless Steel Review

DeLonghi DSM5 5-Quart Stand Mixer, Stainless Steel

I bought this to replace a kitchenaid mixer that died kneading a batch of dough for rolls (e.g., soft bread dough!) I've only had this mixer two weeks, but so far have made two batches of bread (both 2 loafs, whole wheat), pizza dough, and four cakes. Granted, I didn't have a top-of-the line kitchenaid before, but this does so much better! The mixer doesn't struggle while kneading dough -- and I didn't have to hold on to the mixer while it was kneading, to keep it from walking off the counter! I appreciate how compact this mixer is -- it fits on the counter under my upper cabinets and when I pull it out to use it I can tilt the head back without it running into the upper cabinets. I like how smoothly it changes speeds (and that it will turn itself off it the motor gets overloaded), and that it has metal gears (not having these features contributed to the death of my former KA mixer). The Delonghi DSM5 was ranked #2, just below the Kithenaid Pro 6 qu, by Cooks Magazine (11/05).

Works well. Kind of loud but it may be common among the electrical pasta machines. One important thing the instruction manual failed to mentioned. In order to remove the paddle inside the kneader, after you twist the black knob to the correct position, the manual failed to mention you need to pull out the knob completely in order to remove the kneading paddle. Also, you can not follow the pasta recipe exactly. I tried to do that and the dough came out dry and crumbly. Try 400g with 5 large eggs first. And then add a little bit of flour if the dough is too wet. Use Marcato's recipes as guideline. What makes this pasta machine special is the longer 8" dough roller. Look up pasta making books to see the procedures involved in making pasta. The instruction from Marcato is not very detailed. The only thing that is accurate is to knead the dough for 5 minutes. Another minor issue is the cleaning process. The kneading machine compartment is not removable. Also the orange lid is not removable. So you will have to wipe it to clean it. It really makes wonderful tasting pasta. Reliability is to be determined. I will update once I tried the 8" dough roller and the pizza cutter. Look online to see who has the best pricing on this particular model. For people who own a kitchenaid mixer, buying this marcato model with the kneading machine may not be necessary. Although I believe this kneader is more of a true kneader because I believe you may have to knead 10-15min on a kitchenaid mixer vs using this Marcato Kneader. The measuring cup is nice but not essential. I used the flour part of the measuring cup only. It is unnecessary to crack the eggs and drop them into the egg compartment part. You can just crack the eggs and drop them directly into the kneader. The motor seems to give decent speed to cut the dough sheet into pasta. There are optional pasta cutting attachment available but they are like $60 each.
UPDATE: Do not put more than 400g of flour. Actually 300g is ideal because if you put to much inside the kneader, the lid will pop open. When the lid pops open, the machine stops from kneading. 300g of flour will get you enough pasta for 4 servings.
